GEO: being usable in generated responses

It remains subject to the platform's retrieval and presentation decisions.

The overlap is much larger than the difference. All three benefit from a website that returns usable pages, exposes important content in rendered HTML, connects related pages with crawlable links, identifies the organization and authors, and gives people a complete answer.

What Google officially says about AI search optimization

Google's current Search Central guidance states that its established SEO best practices remain relevant for AI features in Search. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements, no special schema, and no need for a new machine-readable AI file to appear in those features.

That does not mean every conventional tactic remains wise or that AI features behave exactly like a list of links. Red flags in third-party advice

  • A guarantee that a page will be cited, recommended, indexed, or ranked.
  • A claim that one submission sends a business to all AI platforms.

  • A private score presented as a disclosed platform ranking factor.
  • Recommendations to create near-duplicate pages for every phrasing of a question.

Translate the acronym into a testable scope

Before approving an SEO, AEO, or GEO proposal, replace the label with a plain-language work statement. A credible scope names the websites and page types, identifies the platforms whose official controls will be reviewed, lists the content and technical deliverables, assigns implementation responsibility, and defines what evidence will be collected before and after the work.

For example, “improve GEO” is not a complete deliverable. A testable version might say: review public access for documented search crawlers; correct approved robots and firewall conflicts; rewrite five service-page openings to answer the main question; add visible primary-source citations to time-sensitive claims; connect those pages to relevant diagnostic guides; and record referral, citation, and prompt-sample observations for three named products over a defined period. None of those actions promises the platform's outcome.

The scope should also identify exclusions. Directory cleanup, paid media, public relations, merchant feeds, profile verification, technical website remediation, and editorial production are different activities even when they support the same visibility goal. Describe each by its real process, access requirements, and measurement instead of hiding it inside an AI acronym.

Finally, specify a review date for platform-dependent work. A current crawler token, referral parameter, product label, or feature rule is not a permanent website fact. The provider should identify the official source, the person responsible for rechecking it, and the pages that must change if the documentation changes.
